Coach Funding

Active Dorset Coach Bursary Scheme

Active Dorset recognises that having a fit for purpose coaching workforce is central to successfully developing and delivering sport. One of the key objectives of the Active Dorset Coaching System Support Network (CSSN) is to build the capacity of the coaching workforce in Dorset. Therefore Active Dorset is able to offer a small amount of financial support to its partners to help train and develop more coaches.

Who is eligible?

The focus of this funding is to train level 1 and 2 coaches; however L3 coaches can be supported where the applicant organisation can provide clear evidence of need. Coach teacher / tutor qualifications can also be supported.  All coaches benefiting from scheme must either work as a coach or reside in the Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset area to qualify. Grants cannot be awarded retrospectively so all applications must be submitted and approved prior to coaches attending the training that the grant is subsidising.  Applications can only be received from Local Authority, NGB or HE/FE partners. Club applications must be submitted by NGBs along with details of the coaches benefiting from the award. The individual coaches must be registered with the Coach support system iCoach. Website address is www.activedorset.org/icoach

How will applications be assessed?

All applications will be assessed by the Active Dorset Workforce Steering Group based on the following criteria:

  • Evidence of need – why do you need this investment, is this a strategic investment
  • Impact on participation – will the investment lead to an increase in coaching delivery and participation in sport
  • Value for money – match funding to grant ratio
  • Speed of implementation – how quickly will the qualifications be delivered

The Active Dorset Workforce steering group has cross sector representation from Local Authorities, NGB’s and HE/FE sectors and will assess each application individually. The Workforce Steering Group will notify all applicant organisations within two weeks of the outcome of their application.

Please Note:  Applications must be received 1 month prior to the scheduled start of Course for which funds are requested.

Payment of Award

Payment will be made to the applicant organisation by cheque. Payment will only be made once Active Dorset has received formal confirmation that the training outlined in the application has been successfully completed.

Level of funding

The maximum grant that can be applied for per organisation is £500. Active Dorset will only fund up to 50% or £100 per qualification whichever comes first.  Due to the relatively limited resources available to Active Dorset for supporting this scheme we cannot guarantee that every application will be successful. The amount awarded to your application will be at the discretion of the Workforce Steering Group.

Conditions of bursary

Successful applicant organisations will be requested to fulfil the following requirements:

  • All coaches benefiting from the coach bursary scheme must complete a log of coaching hours delivered.  It is expected that every coach that receives funding must complete 1 hours coaching in Bournemouth, Poole or Dorset for every £10 of funding received, in a post 16 setting.
  • Ensure all their coaches who receive coach bursary funding register on the Active Dorset Coach Database – iCoach.
  • Individual coaches journal their bursary supported coaching hours through iCoach
